El metal sinfónico de los avant-garde Therion, en la Plaza de Toros

La buena noticia para la escena metalera del país es que este 22 de septiembre se presentará en Ecuador unos de los pioneros del metal sinfónico a escala mundial, la agrupación sueca Therion, vista, de acuerdo con los críticos musicales, como una banda avant garde, muy versátil, que ha sabido combinar diversos géneros, desde los más crudos como el death y el heavy con la armonía de la ópera y beats digitalizados de sintetizadores.

Quizá el término avant-garde es lo que hecho mella en la audiencia mundial ya que este grupo es el más sobresaliente entre sus pares (como Nightwish, Haggard, Theater of Tragedy, los mismos Lacrimosa, o tal vez Within Temptation o Katatonia) porque lograron crear un único estilo que abarca, además de una estética evidentemente gótica, una filosofía que se sienta sobre la base de la ideología enmarcada en la mitología nórdica, vista como muchos como oscura.

Therion nació hace 22 años (1985) de la mano de Christopher Johnsson como una banda de death metal puro que se combinaba con ritmos que rayaban en el black metal. No es sino hasta 1996, con la grabación del álbum Theli, que se encaminaron en las raíces del metal sinfónico, lo que hoy por hoy les caracteriza y es la esencia de su eclecticismo musical elaborado con excelencia.

Los integrantes actuales de la banda son: el fundador, el guitarrista Cristofer Johnsson, es el único miembro que ha permanecido en el grupo y es quien escribe la mayoría del material de las canciones; Kristian Niemann (guitarra), Johan Niemann (bajo) y Setter Karlsson (batería). Los colaboradores actuales son Tomas Karlsoon (letras), Mats Levén (vocalista), Snowy Shaw (vocalista), Katarina Lilja (vocalista), Hannah Holgersson (vocalista soprano en estudio) y Lori Lewis (vocalista soprano en directo).

Cuenta con trece álbumes grabados en estudio, de los que se destaca Crowning of Atlantis (1999), que a su vez abarca una muy desarrollada técnica musical e impresionantes voces dignas de estar en un teatro de ópera acorde a las sinfónicas de cámara a escala mundial.

Otro de sus trabajos que consiguió la suficiente atención mediática y de la audiencia fue el editado en 2000 Deggial, trabajo que llegó a ser una leyenda en la historia del metal a manera de tributo a Carmina Burana, la famosa ópera siniestra de Carl Orff, quien tomó los textos medievales de la obra para elaborar un trabajo moderno en 1937.

Como caballeros medievales y princesas cuyas facciones confundirse podrían con las hadas de los bosques y voces angelicales, Therion ha elaborado un estilo que confluye en dos planos: el de exaltación al mundo fantástico de aquella mitología nórdica –entre guerreros y seres imaginarios- y celta que, a su vez, confluye en las emociones del ser humano, especialmente aquellas que se remiten al dolor, tristeza, soledad, desamor, miedo y muerte. El tánatos está presente en las líricas de Therion que a través de su trabajo se transforma en una bella sinfonía inolvidable para el oído humano. Sin embargo, esta belleza roza lo radical. Su música no está enmarcada en la belleza armónica de la ópera sino en el espíritu extremo de la crudeza del metal, por lo que conforma un género dual de sensibilidad profunda con un lado radical e incluso agresivo.

Therion actualmente se encuentra realizando su tour 2007 en el que promociona su último trabajo titulado Gothic Kabbalah, gira con la que arrivará al Ecuador en un concierto que será memorable para los amantes de este versátil y desarrollado estilo.

La agrupación promete un concierto en la Plaza de Toros Quito a la altura de los performances europeos con ocho personas en escena interpretando sus más famosas melodías a partir del año 1996, el que los consagró como pioneros.

Christopher Jonhsson fue entrevistado por la propietaria de este blog, en una entrevista para Diario HOY.

1.- How is it for the band to be considered as an "avant-garde" group in the metal music scene?

We have been avant-garde since the first album in the eyes of the audience in each times (today one may ask why our first album should be considered original, but back then it was very original compared to the other bands at that time), so it's something that has alwas been a part of the band and nothing I've reflected much over. However, it was not until 1996 with Theli that we became a really big band and started to effect the music scene and I started to get this kind of questions.


2.- Therion is an essential band for the symphonic metal with a 20 years of experience. How the band feels now after the experienced years?

It's only me who is left since the early days. For me Therion has been a life partner and as I am now 35 years old, Therion has been my occupation since I was 15, so it's in a way like a marriage. When I sarted I had no idea that we would even get a record deal (though this was of course my goal) or that I would be able to become famous and play in so many countries all over the world. We've now done 13 studio albums and if someone would have asked me after the 5:th album how I though I would feel after album number 13, I would probably have guessed that it never would happen, but if it did I'd be "Old, tired and repeating my self", so it's actually really nice that I feel very full of energy and that the biggest critique against our new almbum is that we've progressed TOO much.
Sincerely I look forwad to another 20 years and another 13 albums and today I'm sure that as long s I want to continue, I will make interesting music that brings something new each time (else I will stop in time and let Therion remain a unique band).


3.- What the band will have done before arriving Ecuador?

We have some separate concerts and festivals in Israel, France, Finland, Ireland and fr the first time in 3 years also a concert here in Sweden. And of course we will rehease some days too. So we will be warmed up perfectly for Equador.


4.- What the band will offer to the ecuadorian audience considering that here there's a crowd of fans that love at heart symphonic metal genre?

We will bring with us the full european stage production and play a set for a around 2 hours and 15 min with songs from albums between 1996-2007. It will be he first show on the Latin American branch of the tour, so we will be full of energy, that's for sure! =)


How is the performance?

This tour we've developed into some sort of metal musical operatic band, with a stage show that is truely amazing for a metal band of our size in our generation.

How many people will be at the scene?

The band + 4 soloists (8 all in all).


5.- Which are the future plans of the band?

2008 we will take a vacation, 2009 we're recording a new album and 2010 is the next World Tour (which hopefully will include Equador again, I think it will be a great experience there).
The next album will be the most ambitions to this date and will end the quadroly which the last 3 albums has been a part of.
